Clinton County Plans For New Voting Machines

Plattsburgh, New York - November 28, 2007

Will New York have new voting machines in time for the upcoming presidential election? Some say no, but Clinton County election officials say there is a good chance they'll be in place by then.

Clinton County has been using decades-old machines that are no longer manufactured. Election commissioners from across the state are meeting in Syracuse next week. They have a plan, which they will present to a state judge, that they say could put electronic voting machines on line sooner than expected.

"If they allow us to order the voting machines and have them prepared for May, we will put on an election for November for the presidential election," said election commissioner Judy Layhee.

Layhee also said that the new electronic voting machines will be handicap accessible so that disabled voters can also use them.
